Between Languages and Worlds: The Letters of Joseph Sabah from Entre Ríos
In 1895 Joseph Sabah, a teacher born in Itzmir, and educated in the schools of the Alliance Israéllite Universelle of the Ottoman Empire, and in the Alliance normal school in Paris, landed in the Argentinean coasts to found, organize, and direct the schools of the Jewish agricultural colonies of the province of Entre Ríos. When he arrived in Argentina, he was twenty-nine and he had already taught in his native Itzmir. The letters Sabah wrote to the administration of the Alliance and of the Jewish Colonization Association are an extraordinary register of the colonization of Entre Ríos, told in beautiful articulate prose.
The letters are selected from the copious correspondence archived at the headquarters of the Alliance Israélite Universelle and they will be published in a critical edition.
